When
we proofread and edit we will check and correct spelling, grammar and
sentence construction.
Spelling:
(a) British English, as per first spelling, Oxford English Dictionary,
or
(b) American English, as per first spelling, Merriam-Webster Dictionary,
or
(c) Australian English, as per first spelling, Macquarie Dictionary.
Grammar:
There is a fine line between pedantry and common sense in using the
English language. We are familiar with, and refer to, standard texts such
as Fowler's Modern English Usage. However we are also aware
of the ever-changing use of language, particularly in the electronic medium,
and we are flexible in approach depending on the type of document being
reviewed.
Good grammar
is designed to avoid ambiguity, and present the material in the clearest
possible way.
Proofreading
or copy-editing?
Proofreading
is a final review of your work to eliminate errors. We will correct spelling,
language usage, and grammar. Where the meaning of any part of the document
is unclear the section will be marked.
Copy-editing
combines proofreading with revision to enhance the clarity and flow of
the document. We will seek to improve the professionalism of the English,
replacing inappropriate words or phrases with more appropriate ones, as
required.
In traditional
publishing the two roles are separate, and we can proofread hardcopy for
you using traditional proof marks. But for electronic publishing, including
web design, it may be that you require a combination of the two services,
and we will be happy to discuss this with you.
